Paintings

During the past decade, seed pods I’ve collected while hiking have served as imagery and metaphor for my monoprints, relief prints, etchings, and paintings.

Drawings

Most of my drawings have been created during 5-minute to 1-hour life drawing sessions.    Various types of media were used, including graphite, watercolor, crayon, pastel, and ink. Many of the drawings were later refined in my home studio.

Prints

I’ve enjoyed the technical challenges of many types of printmaking over the years, including intaglio, relief, screenprinting, and monotype. The bulk of my work has been relief printmaking, which has involved carving wood (woodcuts) or linoleum (linocuts) and printing the carved blocks on archival paper using a printing press. Each color in a relief print must be carved, registered, and printed separately in order to create a single print. I presently use a 15” Conrad Etching Press in my home studio.

iPad Drawings/Paintings

The following figure drawings & paintings were made using the Procreate app & Apple Pencil on my iPad during life drawing sessions.  In order to inspire creativity, props such as African masks, skeletons, sculptures, etc. populated the model’s stage.  Basic drawings were completed in 5 - 20 min sessions and were further refined during hours of work in my studio.  Some images were created with traditional media, then exported to Procreate for refinement.

The Procreate app includes hundreds of customizable brushes and colors, an advanced layer system, and tools that simulate traditional drawing and painting.  The images can be exported, shared, and printed on archival papers.
